Rope Craft

This is a note on some rope craft that I've come across and found practical or interesting.

Attaching a rope to an object

• The Anchor Hitch
  Practical. Unlike the Double Dragon know (which may be more secure), it leaves no slack at the object tied on.
• The Farrimond Friction Hitch (Short summary)
  It is easy to tighten and easy to release
  Tip: to enable the rope to tighten itself, apply tension to the main line to keep it straight in the final step, ie when tightening the knot.
• The Double Dragon Knot
  It is useful for making a loop round a pole.
  Note: for that purpose, the Anchor Hitch has less slack and the Farrimond Friction Hitch is easier to release, though the Double Dragon Knot seems more secure.
  It is also good for making a loop midway in a rope, which is useful for hanging things and climbing.
  Note: For that purpose, I find the Alpine Butterfly Knot easier to make.

Other Useful Knots

• The Bowline Knot from (08:50)
  This is a basic knot.
  Useful tips to remember: "The rabbit comes up through the hole, runs around the back side of the tree, and goes back into its hole."
• The Zeppelin (from 06:28)
  This is a very practical knot; it is useful for putting two ropes together. It is more secure than the Square Knot, which could be pulled apart under certain conditions (demonstrated in the above video).
• The Alpine Butterfly Knot (from 04:55)
  It is useful for making a loop in the middle of a rope. The way that it is taught in the above video helps viewers to do the knot without looking. It doesn't need to access either end of the rope.
  Note: It is easier than the Double Dragon Knot for making a loop in the middle of a rope.
• Stopper Knot / Figure 8 Knot (from 01:55)
  It is used to put a knot at the end of a rope so that it won't slip through a hole; easy to undo when needed
• The Rolling Hitch (from 03:03)
  It attaches one rope to another. It can slide one rope over another to lock things in place. so it is useful for reducing slack.
  Useful tips to remember: "two wraps under, one wrap over"
• The X Knot
  It was described as "the world's most dangerous knot", as "once tightened, it won't let go"
  Note: It could get loose, in my experience, but I may have done it wrong.

Other Rope Craft

• The Monkey's Fist Knot
  Useful for making a weight for throwing, or a self-defence tool
  Note: I made one using 60cm of a 4mm paracord
• The Snake Knot
  Good for making a string to be attached to a key or a tool
