Why are some people argumentative?

Edward Tsang 2015.07.12

Establishing one's position in the hierarchy is very important, especially among social animals. Where fighting and bullying is not acceptable, being argumentative helps to establish one's power. Being argumentative is seen at work and between partners, who do it either consciously or sub-consciously.

Establishing one's position in a hierarchy

In the animal world, establishing hierarchy is very important. It determines who has priority over territories, food or mates. Animals establish their hierarchies through fighting or bullying.

Arguing is a means of establishing power

In a human society, fighting and bullying is not always acceptable. When they are not, hierarchy is often established by arguing. Winning arguments helps one to establish dominance. Starting arguments often helps, especially when the other side have already shown signs of giving in.

Conscientious or not

Being argumentative is a natural way to establish one's position in a hierarchy. Some may do it conscientiously to establish power. Others may do it sub-conscientiously.

Examples

Some bosses have to reject proposals from their subordinates, regardless of its appropriateness. Some wives (husbands) have to refute their husbands (wives), regardless of the content.
