Your critics may be your valuable asset

Edward Tsang 2016.12.03

Every manager needs to know where he/she could improve. Only those who care about the organisation enough will criticise. Only confident and competent managers (leaders) know how to treasure critics. A poor manager will make sure that no one criticises, thus write off the organisation's valuable assets.

Who would criticise?

People who are incompetent are in no position to make useful comments to an organisation. They may criticise, but insensible criticisms can easily be recognised by a competent manager.

People who are competent, but do care much about an organisation will never criticise its policies. They will just do what they are told to do. By keeping their mouths shut, they will not get into trouble. They can concentrate on other things in life.

Only those who are competent and care about the organisation will critics with valid points.

How to handle critics?

A competent manager will read criticism positively and use them to improve an organisation. They understand that only those who care will express their views openly.

Managers who lack confidence dislike critics. They see any criticism as challenge to their power. An incompetent manager will not be able to recognise valid criticism. They may never understand that those who criticise may be the best people in the organisation, and their critics could be used to improve the organisation.

An organisation in which no one criticises is destined to failure. A poor manager will make sure that no one criticises.
