China Eastern Airline's Slogan

Edward Tsang 2009.06.30

At the back of every seat, there is an advert shown at the right. The English translation of the slogan reads as:

Cities. enhances lives: Eastern. enriches travels!

Forget about the punctuations, which are intriguing. It took me some time to figure out why I was uncomfortable about this slogan. To start with, cities do not always "enhance lives". There are plenty of people who prefer country lives. But even if cities enhance lives, what has it got to do with Eastern enriching travel? These seem to be two independent assertions.

I've finally found a plausible explanation that logically brings the two statements together: "As cities do not necessarily enhance lives, Eastern do not necessarily enrich travel". Surely that can't be the intended message by China Eastern Airline.

I remain puzzled: what message does Eastern Airline want to convey?
