Football refereeing

Football as a big enterprise. The results of one game could have big financial implications. The results of a football game could be influenced by a referee's judgement. Therefore, consistency in refereeing must be guarded; it isn't.

Football as a big enterprise

The results of one football game could mean millions of Pounds to a club, let it be a relegation, promotion or proceed to the next round of a cup. It could mean even more money to the book makers as well.

A referee's judgements could significantly influence football results

At the moment, the referee has too much power. A referee can influence the game by sending players off, award penalties, or use many other means.

A referee may have a bad day in terms of performance

A referee is just a human being. He/she could make wrong decisions in a bad day. He/she might even be tempted by bribery. With so much money involved, the system must be set up to ensure fair play.

Consistency in refereeing must be guarded

Referee decisions must be subject to challenges, either on the spot (as in tennis) or retrospectively. Major decisions, such as goals and sending off, should be backed up by replays. At the moment, nothing guards against poor decisions.
