Tension is building up in Hong Kong, it seems.
Resentment is accumulating in Hong Kong. 練乙錚 gave two reasons why resentment is building up. If the rich keep showing off their wealth (described in the article 杜家酒宴), they'll simply fuel hostility.
It is widely believed that economic inequality is a contributing factor to social unrest. Gini Coefficient is a measure of economic inequality. There are many statistics on Gini Coefficient. According to CIA's report (spreadsheet), Hong Kong's Gini Coefficient (as recorded in 2007) placed it at 17th in the world (at 53.3%). Hong Kong is worse than countries such are Zambia, Niger, Swaziland, Zimbabwe, etc, which are politically not the most stable countries. Hong Kong is worse than all other developed countries in the world; the closest one being Singapore (at 48.1%, ranked 30, way below Hong Kong). For reference, China (at 47%) ranked 36, ranks much lower than Hong Kong.
Wen Jiabao said "China must reduce rich-poor gap". Does the Hong Kong Government recognise the crisis? If so, are they doing anything?
